Video interviews with cast members at the end of this review.
I wasn’t certain what to expect when I went to see Spamalot at Roger Rocka’s this weekend as I’m not really a fan of the movie it is loosely based on, Monty Python and The Holy Grail. But I really enjoyed this show!
Spamalot pokes fun at the legend of King Arthur and his knights, and as I said is loosely based on the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Having not seen the movie in a long time, I can’t really do a lot of comparing–however, I did recognize several of the same jokes that I felt worked way better on stage than they did in a movie, such as the Knights of Ni and the Black Knight.
This show is filled with silliness and a lot of fun, along with some silly and beautiful songs. Chris Carsten did a good job as an older King Arthur, with Steve Souza as his funny assistant Patsy. Greg Grannis was so very funny as Sir Robin and one of my favorites in the show. This is my first time seeing Greg on stage but I truly hope not my last. Daniel Hernandez as Lancelot was wonderful as always, and I loved how he and Dominic Grijalva got the chance to show off their tap dancing skills again in a number or two in this show. Dominic was funny at Sir Bedevere–the knight who kept coming up with very bad “great” ideas.
As the only female lead in this show, Emily Pessano as The Lady In The Lake, sparkled on stage as always–both funny and possessing a lovely voice. The adorable Brandon Delsid of Basically Brandon was a riot in his many roles. Oh and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Teddy Maldonado’s (Sir Galahad) blonde wig lol–what a sight–that alone may be worth the price of admission!
A couple of my favorite songs were “Find Your Grail” and “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.” Everyone did a great job in this very fun and very funny show! If you are looking for a night of laughter and old fashioned musical comedy to take you away from your troubles for an evening, don’t miss Spamalot on stage at Roger Rocka’s in Fresno until March 17. More details can be found on their KRL event page.
