Angel is a zombie. You won’t see her moaning for brains, as long as she’s adequately supplied with freeze-dried brain chips and the fresh stuff she can grab at her morgue-assistant job, and she is the point-of-view character of Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie Unchained. She’s foul-mouthed, a former druggie, and recently reassembled after falling apart when the parasite that gives her zombie abilities was damaged by chemical abuse. She can pass for human, but some new zombies are staggering around the morgue, biting and moaning for brrraaaiiinnss. Even worse, they have gator bite-marks, which means the local bayou harbors infected reptiles.
When people start turning to growling zombies, from bowling teams to law enforcement, the zombie scientists call in Dr. Kristi Charish, a self-centered, prima-donna researcher who has betrayed them in the past. How can they stop this plague of the walking dead?
Angel may be uncultured and prone to addictions, but she’s trying to better herself by taking community-college classes, helping at the zombie-run labs, and being a good morgue employee (the occasional brain to eat is just the perks of the job). She’s good-hearted, makes mental connections between clues that others miss, and has parasite-modification doses that can give her super-strength and Flash-level speed. She often finds herself in peril, but she manages to triumph, despite her many faults.
The White Trash Zombie series (this is book number six) is marked with wild inventiveness and humor. Rowland’s urban paranormal demi-world of zombies working to keep themselves from being outed, while they try to ensure their supply of brains for snacking, is a network of secret brain-eaters, shape-imitating multi-centenarians, and friends and loved ones who know the secrets, but aren’t telling. This time, Angel finds herself a den leader of a pack of alligators…or is she a gator-mama?
White Trash Zombie Unchained is a wild-and-crazy book in a wild-and-crazy series. A lovably human zombie, some major intrigue, and blood-soaked action. Major moral decisions for major characters. Avoiding FBI agents and their questions. Gators of the walking dead. What’s not to love?
