Remy Chandler is an angel, but he doesn’t live…up there. He isn’t a fallen angel either, just a disillusioned one, after fighting against his brethren during Lucifer’s revolt. He’s been on Earth for a long time, and he works as a private eye. His wife is dead but he has found a lovely woman, Linda, who cares about him (although she doesn’t know the truth of what he is), and he has a dog, Marlowe, that can talk to him, because he understands the language of animals in Thomas E. Sniegoski’s Walking in the Midst of Fire, the sixth Remy Chandler novel.

Remy (known to other angels as Remuel) has been called in to solve a devilish mystery, the murder of a Heavenly general, and he finds himself plunged into a demonic realm where angels who have developed a taste for all the excesses of the human world and go to do things they shouldn’t. He deals with the Fallen, with unusual children, with a Vatican sorcerer who has serious inner conflicts (I mean, something is in there, wanting to get out), and with the forever man, one angry, 2,000-year-old person who can not die, thanks to a young man from Nazareth who wanted to test his powers.

The powers of Heaven and Darkness are heading for war, and humanity would be collateral damage. Remy tries to stop that from happening by finding and protecting the general’s killer.

Some things that occur in this book are not nice, even disturbing, as are some characters who should be on the side of Good. Sniegoski draws them all with surprising sympathy, including some angels who are there as little more than muscle. The reader gets glimpses of what they are like, what they care about and what makes them uncomfortable about what they are called on to do. This is an exercise in angel noire, sending a disillusioned hero into a labyrinth of evil and deception to find the truth. Will he be able to find it? If he finds it, will he be able to keep it safe? Remy will have a devil of a time, either way.
