The owner of Shell Island’s Holloway Catering, River Holloway Merrick is thrilled to have been hired to cater the Nature Coalition’s special event dinner. She’s especially honored to be serving veterinarian Jasmine Garr as they name her their Volunteer of the Year, which makes hearing the news of her death two days later all the more shocking. Found shot in the back in her yard, Jasmine’s quirky Chicken Lady neighbor becomes one of the first suspects for the shooting.

My all-time favorite summertime activity is going to the beach. As a kid, I loved bobbing in the waves and body surfing. I delighted in the delightful buoyancy the salty ocean gave me. I also learned a deep respect for the ocean’s power after being pounded by a few waves. That respect taught me to be vigilant even when enjoying the experience because another wave would come along soon.

Back when I penned my first novel at the end of the last century, I thought that being an author meant sitting at my desk writing books. I also thought it was the publisher’s job to promote those books so that we both made money. Silly me! Once upon a time that was true, but by the time I sold my first book, publishers had abdicated this responsibility for all but a handful of their authors. Promotional efforts had become the responsibility of authors.
