The changing seasons are subtle in San Francisco, but in the spring the days begin to stay light longer, and the ocean’s current pushes a saltier smell ashore. It was 1967. I had been living in the Bay Area for a little over a year when one April evening I went to Fisherman’s Wharf to buy a crab for dinner.
