“Don’t look up.” Peter’s heart pounded. Harris hawks. They hunted in packs.
Twenty years ago, several days after Easter, my husband Bruce and I returned home from work, let our Cocker Spaniel outside in the fenced yard and went in the house. Bridget the dog refused to come back in the house, riveted to something white beyond our fence. Long story short–our neighbors had moved out that day, leaving behind a yard full of refuse…and one baby bunny. We cornered the wee frightened thing that felt like bird fluff in my hand, and I immediately dubbed him Precious. And so began our saga of rescuing rabbits.
A recent college graduate, Cato Johnson shares a house with six other people. Not exactly a situation for a pet. Dogs were not allowed in her rental, and she already had a bird so getting a cat was not a good idea. A bunny seemed like a good fit, and, though she’d never had a bunny before, Cato was ready to give one a try.
Can you imagine anything more soothing than stroking soft bunny fur when you’re sick or lonely? That’s exactly what China provides when she goes on her therapy visits to a Veterans Hospital or an area nursing home.
