Author’s Con: Mystery Short Story

by Daryl Wood Gerber

About a month ago, my son Patrick called us. Nothing dire, as my law partners at Livingston, Strom, and Willoughby would say. Quite the opposite. Patrick was so excited. Tasha, his beautiful, talented bride, had gotten a small publishing deal for her bodice-ripping romance novel. Small was an overstatement, but I kept my tongue. His wonderful thrillers were not yet published, but he didn't sound jealous. Not in the least. Tasha was going to be on a panel at Romance Extraordinaire, he went on.

For Cheddar or Worse By Avery Aames: Review/Giveaway

It’s the second Annual Cheese Festival, and the Cheese Shop, as the locals call it, is geared up and ready to go. Charlotte is newly married and loving it, helping with all the festival events, and involved in what’s called the brain trust. It’s a brainstorming session for cheese makers, journalists, marketers, and a surprise guest—the infamous and generally hated Lara Berry. It’s Valentine’s Day and Charlotte Bessette, cheese shop owner, is marrying artisanal cheese farmer Jordan Pace. First, however, Charlotte has to endure a bachelorette party with Deputy Devon O’Shea as the entertainment. During the festivities, Devon gets a frantic phone message regarding his uncle and the town’s beloved bartender, Tim.
The bad news is that Tim is dead and his body is on Jordan’s property, and now it’s in Charlotte’s best interests to find the real killer so she can take that walk down the aisle. Running the cheese shop is almost a distraction with all she has going on.

“David!” I pounded on the apartment door. “David, are you in there? Dave—”
The door swung open and my breath caught in my chest. David hung from a rope in the middle of the room, his face blue, body slack, boxers soiled. All the booze and crap I had consumed last night gushed up my throat. I drove it down and stared harder in an attempt to memorize the scene.

A Bad Lie: A Mystery Short Story

My sister never listens to me. I have warned her to avoid crowds. People are walking germ carriers. They do not bathe often enough; they eat with their hands and lick their fingers. I have seen kids drop cookies in the middle of the road, moms pick up the danged things and hand them right back to the kids. Disgusting. But crowds at a sports event are a necessary evil and an LPGA tournament as prestigious as the Avonita Classic needs crowds–also known as fans.
