Mell’s Mutts: The Fast Food Gang

Elayne Gonzalez is the founder of Mell’s Mutts, an animal rescue in Fresno, CA. They will be sharing their animal rescue stories with us each month.

We would like you to meet Izzy and her “fast food” gang. Why fast food, you ask? Well, all nine of her adorable puppies are named after fast food favorites. Let us whet your appetite, care for some, Panda Express, Deli-Delicious, Carl’s Jr, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Starbucks, Bob’s Big Boy, Taco Bell, or Burger King? Whatever you’re craving we got it!

The Fast Food Gang

There are five girls: Panda, Deli, Wendy, Star, and Bell. Then there are four boys: Carl, Arby, Big Boy (who is actually the smallest), then King. They are eight weeks old now, and they are a mix of literally every breed you can imagine. Their mom, Izzy, appears to be a poodle mix, and none of them look like they would even be related to her. It’s pretty cute if you ask us! We picked a few of the puppies and completed DNA testing, in order to get a better guess at what their size might be when full grown, and, well, the results show they are a mix of pity, poo, and chihuahua, too! Along with like ten other breeds! So only time will tell but we will guess they might be between 30-40 pounds and definitely some of the cutest pups around!

Izzy was found in a rural area of the county, roaming all alone. It was pretty clear she was expecting. She was sweet from day one and so very happy to be around people, but she was in rough physical condition. Her fur/hair was so mated and over grown, we couldn’t even see her eyes so off to the groomer she went!

Fast forward a month and she gave birth to nine puppies, and every single one survived. Now, they are eight weeks and ready to find their very own homes.

We absolutely love puppies, I mean, who doesn’t? However, Mell’s Mutts mission and the actual reason our organization was first started was because we saw the great importance and need to spay/neuter. Prior to COVID, we were offering free or low cost spay/neuter services (with the veterinarian’s we work with) to any individual who needed help fixing their dog, and sometimes cats, too. We hope that we are able to resume this assistance once COVID restrictions are lifted. So with that said, as much as we love puppies, we know that for every puppy that is born that lessens the chance of a dog that is currently in a shelter from finding a home and which then increases the chance of a dog in a shelter being euthanized. Believe us, there will never be a shortage of dogs or puppies and as much as we love rescuing them we truly look forward to a time where we will no longer have to. Everyone of our fast foodies will be fixed prior to being formally adopted and so will their mom, Izzy. So these ten doggies will not contribute to the overwhelming stray, homeless, and over population crisis our Central Valley has.
