Does Bigfoot really exist? Many people think so. Over one thousand sightings have been reported in Washington and California alone, and like accounts have been made from lonely, mountain areas throughout the world. In Wyoming, where our High Country Mystery series takes place, Bigfoot has been spotted many times, mostly near Yellowstone and in the Big Horn Mountains.

Recently, we two sisters traveled to Wyoming, the setting of our present series, in search of a plot for our tenth novel. Returning to Kansas, feeling let-down over our failure to agree on an idea, we cut off from the main highway at Hastings, Nebraska. On a side road, we encountered a sign advertising a Bigfoot museum. We found this unexpected announcement intriguing, so after passing it, we decided to turn back.

We were admitted by the curator of the Crossroads of America Museum, Harriett McFeely, a friendly, well-informed lady who led us toward a huge, awe-inspiring replica of Bigfoot. Face to face with that impressive image, we knew we had found the inspiration for our next book. We regarded each other in silent acknowledgement: what could be more exciting than Bigfoot?

The museum had appeared like the mysterious curiosity shop that seemed to come from nowhere. We spent much time studying the displays which contained many pictures of the famous “Patty” sighting as well as those from all over the world. We laughed as we compared our feet to the plaster cast of a Bigfoot one, and lingered over the evidence of bones and oddly bent branches. We heard actual recordings of howls that sent a chill down the spine, and photographs of huge beasts—strange, apelike images walking upright like men. We had made references to Bigfoot in the eighth novel of the series, Rapid River Hoax, but in a way that called for little research. Now, we began researching in earnest.

On our drive home, we decided to open our novel at the moment when Sheriff Jeff McQuede’s friend, Professor Barry Dawson, tricks McQuede into attending a Bigfoot conference. Dawson had been invited to join his friends, a group of professors from the University of Washington, on a rugged trip into isolated mountains to investigate a recent sighting. The reluctant McQuede soon notices that bitter rivalry exists between the scientists, both professional and in the form of love triangles. When a member of the team is found dead, McQuede must solve the biggest case of his career. Did Bigfoot commit murder, or was this a carefully disguised plan?’

We had a great time writing this book, and we hope people who enjoy our Jeff McQuede’s adventures will have as much fun reading it!
