Having recently passed the bar exam, newbie lawyer Corrie Locke has a job working at a movie studio in the contracts department. She is also the daughter of a famous private investigator who recently died. When a movie stunt turns deadly and an actor is killed, she is roped into investigating the murder by his mentor, Lacy Halloway, an old time actress who has free reign at the studio.
As Corrie and her friend Michael start investigating the murder things move into high gear. Lacy’s home has an intruder and someone keeps following Corrie. Cryptic notes keep showing up leading them to believe that the dead man is actually still alive, but where is he hiding? Who is telling the truth, and who isn’t? Everywhere she turns Corrie gets the runaround and keeps having encounters with a man who wants to know where the plan is. Can Corrie and Michael survive long enough to find out if the actor is still alive and what he is involved in.
I like how the mystery was plotted with lots of dead ends and subplots that kept you guessing. The pacing was also well done, and I couldn’t stop reading until I was done with the entire book. A recurring theme is Corrie’s search for her father who she believes is still alive. Is she getting help from him in finding clues and solutions, or is it just her imagination? Does Lacy know more than she is letting on? After all Lacy and her father were old friends!
I really enjoyed how these characters came to life on the written page. They are wildly realistic and totally crazy. Corrie is a gung-ho girl who won’t let anything stand in her way when it comes to helping her friends and advancing her career. She has been trained by her late father in martial arts and all manner of detective skills, and it all comes in handy as she investigates. Her boyfriend Michael is right beside her helping clear up the mess she finds herself in. He is good at taking direction while being supportive. Lacy Halloway is an old-time movie star diva who is used to getting her way. I like how she manipulates Corrie into finding the clues, even when they don’t get the correct answers. The three of them make a perfect team. I highly recommend this cozy mystery to anyone who enjoys a feisty heroine with laugh out loud sidekicks.

Having retired from a state university law school, this storyline really holds a special interest to me. Thanks so much for the opportunity to read it.
Hi Jeanne! Thank you for taking the time to visit and leave a comment – it’s a little different from the usual lawyer hero/heroine since it takes place mostly on the lot of a movie studio (which bears a striking resemblance to the one I worked in). 🙂 Good luck!
Lida is a new author to me. Would really like to read.
