Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of Cat About Town. We also have a link to order it from Amazon, and from an indie bookstore where a portion goes to help support KRL.

Maddie James is home on Daybreak Island for her grandmother’s funeral. Grandma’s death wasn’t unexpected, but she’s mourned by all who knew her. At the gravesite, Maddie sees an orange tabby cat, friendly enough but frightened as mourners approach to offer their condolence.

Maddie’s parents live on the island, but she’s staying with Grandpa. There are rumors Grandpa is losing it—he’s forgetful, nearly broke, and ready to sell the family home. Her plan to fly back to California and her juice bar business keeps getting delayed.

The Food Stroll is a way for local businesses to highlight what they have to offer. It’s well attended by locals and tourists. And one orange tabby cat. book

When the cat runs into a tent, Maddie follows, only to discover a dead body—someone she had words with earlier in the day and who Grandpa argued with as well. Now suspects, just two on a list of many, Maddie wants to find out who the killer really is so she can get back home.

On a personal front, Maddie has several men interested in her, even knowing she’s not likely to stay. Craig is a former boyfriend from years ago. Now he’s a police officer, and even better looking although a little too “by the rules.” Lucas runs the grooming shop, plays in a band, and is equally interesting without the constraints of the badge. Don’t forget Damian who owns a restaurant famous for its lobster rolls. His version is better than the original. He needs some marketing help, and Maddie knows just what to do.

Things get weird when Maddie finds articles about cat cafes in her mail. Grandpa has the same feeling when a contractor shows up to work on his house, but won’t say who’s paying him. To add to the confusion, Grandpa disappears for long periods of time at a job he won’t describe. A second body just makes things worse.

This is the first in a new series that promises to be a good one. Grandpa is an interesting guy, the former Chief of Police. Maddie has her childhood memories of the island as well as California business experience—and a love for all things cat. Her friend Becky is the face of the local newspaper, always tuned into the latest news.

The mystery has enough clues to follow along and maybe even guess the killer but not too soon as several look promising. Romance could provide potential problems depending on what Maddie does next. The side characters are well developed, leaving readers wanting to know more about them. Hopefully, that will be soon.
