Feral Paws Rescue Group in Fresno will be sharing some of their animal rescue adventures with us now every month. Check out KRL’s article about Feral Paws to learn more about them. Lupe Gore is a FPRG volunteer.

In June 2012 a handsome, big, brown and black tabby found himself at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. His human had betrayed him and left him there at age eight. Thanks to some networking and help from local rescuers, he arrived at Feral Paws Rescue on June 25, and immediately went to a foster home. Feral Paws had to make sure he would be kept inside, as he was declawed. He assimilated well into his foster home, although it seemed he had been the only cat in his previous home since he wanted all the attention from his foster human. He especially wanted to sleep on the bed at night, and didn’t care that there were other cats who wanted to do the same thing.

Almost a year later he was still in foster care, although his original foster parent had moved and he again had to assimilate to new surroundings. At that point it seemed he wanted even more to be the only kitty, and still sought out his own space. Thankfully, after a few months Feral Paws found an ideal home for him with a retired lady who lived in an apartment. Berkeley got her undivided attention as well as her homemade Mexican food. He now spends hours perched in a cat tree looking out the window at the birds and people outside. Fortunately, at night she doesn’t mind him sharing her bed, where he likes to sleep on the pillow next to her head. Occasionally, her grown children and grandchildren come to visit and Berkeley gets along with all of them. He also loves Spanish music!

It’s been almost five years since Berkeley ended up in that cage at the shelter, but thankfully Feral Paws Rescue was able to save him, find him foster homes, and eventually found him a forever home. That is what rescues do, and why they are especially needed for those cases when people decide their pets are disposable. Rescues save their lives and see to it that these innocent cats are happy once again.
