Lucy got to take care of her grandson, Patrick, while Toby and his wife were in Haiti. Now they’ve come back, collected Patrick, and are off to Alaska where Lucy is sure a big bear will carry Patrick off into the tundra. She knows her fears, some of them anyway, are ridiculous, but they persist, mostly during the night. Then she’s dragging the next day and has no interest in even getting out of bed. Bill says she’s depressed, and she’d argue about it, but she’s too tired.

Luckily, her friend Sue is to the rescue. Sue met Perry on a previous trip, and they hit it off. Perry has invited Sue and her husband to his British manor house for a special exhibit he’s staging—hats in history. Sue is lending a few of her own collection to help out. Her husband, not being a hat kind of guy, opts to stay home, leaving the open spot for Lucy’s taking. Once traveling, she does feel a bit better, still missing Patrick, but able to take an interest in other things as well.

Although most people would think living in a manor house would be all tea and crumpets, Lucy and Sue get to see up close what repairs cost and how annoying the day trippers can be. When a dead body is found, it’s as much a mystery how it got there as who it is and who did it.

Lucy finds her depression fading more each day as she gets involved in manor life—and death. Of course, the arrival of Aunt Millicent and her maid, Harrison, liven things up a bit, even if they both have a tendency to set one’s teeth one edge. Then there are the art appraisers taking inventory and valuing pieces for insurance and to know in case something has to be sold.

If this isn’t enough to bring Lucy out of her depression, nothing will.

This is book twenty-six in the Lucy Stone Mystery series. At this point, maybe Lucy didn’t need a trip; maybe she just needed a murder to solve. It’s good to see Lucy out of Tinker’s Cove and on her own, under the supervision of Sue, of course.
