St. Mark’s was hosting their annual spring rummage sale, which for the first time was being combined with a cat and dog adoption event. Not only that, but a portion of the proceeds would benefit the local no-kill pet shelter. Not on the list of expected donations was the body of Miss Emilie Plym, the eldest remaining Plym of one of Santa Luisa’s most prominent families. Poor Miss Emilie was beloved and renowned for her dotty wanderings, all the while carrying a toy stuffed dog in her black handbag. So it’s shocking when it’s discovered that Miss Emilie was strangled to death, and that her bank accounts had been gradually drained during the last months of her life.
Mary McGill prides herself on her exemplar organizational skills, so she takes upon herself the duty of discovering whether someone was exploiting the defenseless poor Miss Plym. There seems to have been many candidates circling the confused woman, although her live-in staff, the Duxworths, did what they could to monitor her walkabouts. As beneficiaries of her estate, Miss Plym’s niece and nephew have a decided interest in her valuables, and Richard Plym’s obnoxiousness certainly doesn’t garner him any allies. Gossipy Gloria Sutherland, Miss Plym’s home health care, isn’t shy about sharing her opinions or in staking a claim on the estate, further spreading the circle of suspects in this small California town. Accompanied by her every-present companion cocker spaniel Millie, Mary dedicates herself to investigating, assisting with the next pet adoption event, and trying to ignore the donated Komodo dragon.
This second in the Mary McGill Mystery series embodies the spirit of an English village cozy mystery while placing it firmly on American soil. Mary is a woman of a certain age, with an enviable level of intelligence and confidence. Her nephew-in-law may be the town’s chief of police, but Mary never abuses this connection and prides herself in following the law, ignoring gossip, and maintaining a strict regimen of planned order. She has a soft heart and compassionate soul, though, and along with very strong writing this second in the series is sure to satisfy fans of pet-loving, small town mysteries.

This book sounds like my kind of book. Anytime that dogs are involved, if only in a small way, I am drawn to a book. I am definitely putting it on my TBR list.
