Frankly, I absolutely loved this tale. Author Edith Maxwell has done a magnificent job of weaving historical information, interesting information about the Quakers’ beliefs and culture, and a bit of romance into a fascinating mystery.
The story begins with the heroine, Rose Carroll, a Quaker midwife delivering a baby, for which she receives $2. Rose admits that at twenty-four she’s a bit past marriage age. However, she does have a doctor friend, David Dodge, who is interested in her. However, there is a problem since he’s Catholic.
It’s 1888 and the setting is Amesbury, Massachusetts, a town famous for its carriages that are built in a dozen factories. A devastating fire destroys the factories, some of the houses, and even the post-office. Families are without homes, children lost their parents, parents lost their children, and many without an income. When it’s discovered that the fire was arson, this means that whoever set it is also a murderer.
While busily delivering babies, being wooed by David, and more murder, Rose begins to pick up on clues that she shares with the local police.
Rose is a delightful heroine who stays true to her Quaker beliefs and manner of speech as she goes about her daily life which certainly isn’t dull and includes helping solve crimes. The tale abounds with other wonderful characters like Bertie, the postmistress, who is also Rose’s best friend. Bertie rides horse back and wears pantaloons made of the same fabric as her dresses.
