Like most people, I like consistency. It’s like the difference between opening a bag of Fritos, and opening a box of assorted chocolate candy. You know what you’re going to get with the Fritos, and you never know what you’re going to get with the box of candy (just ask Forrest Gump).
Right now, the Reedley College football team is like that box of candy, and never was it more apparent than Saturday’s 25-23 loss to West Hills College at Reedley High School stadium.
After allowing a touchdown on West Hills’ opening drive, the Tiger defense clamped down and the Tiger offense came alive, scoring three touchdowns to take a 21-6 lead at halftime. It was a bag of Fritos, so to speak.
Then the second half started, the Tiger offense disappeared, and West Hills scored nineteen third quarter points to take a 25-21 lead. The Tigers could only manage a two point safety when a West Hills lineman was called for holding in the end zone.
Whatever adjustments the West Hills coaches made at halftime worked beautifully, but the Tigers were their own worst enemy, with dropped passes, poor tackling, and bad clock management.
So, the Tigers box-of-candy season continues. This talented team should be 6-0 right now, or at the very least, 5-1. Instead they are 3-3 headed into a road game in Aptos this Saturday against Cabrillo College.
Maybe it’s time to call Lieutenant Dan.
