Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer star in this modern update of the 60s TV series as a CIA agent and KGB agent forced to work with each other at the height of the Cold War. The movie is very much a mismatched couple meets spy conventions, and it is highly entertaining. Yes almost everything in this movie you’ve seen before from the two differing personality types bickering, to the spy tropes, to the twist at the end, but it was all done with an eye for style and tongue in cheekness that makes it all instantly charming.

Guy Ritchie, the director, clearly has a niche: two male leads who are completely different from each other having to work together. This interaction sustains the movie and elevates it from being a spy cliché ridden film it could have been. movie

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer kill it throwing their quips at each other flawlessly while giving the plot some emotive heft. I really have to give credit to both actors who committed to their roles fully and never once did I not believe they were the characters on screen. I also have to give kudos to Alicia Vikander who isn’t entirely known in the States, but is such a good actress playing the female lead stuck between the interests of the two agents, and by extension their superiors.

Although I sort of guessed a reveal surrounding her character I didn’t mind considering how entertained I was by time we got to it. Although many will say there are far too many spy tropes in this movie, I don’t necessarily disagree, I will say that Guy Ritchie knows how to frame action sequences amazingly and gives this movie a certain style that is likeable. For a late summer movie that has action and spectacularly beautiful people as leads you can’t go wrong with The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
