I love the Divergent book series so I was very excited for the second installment in the movie franchise. The first movie was faithful to the book almost completely so I knew the director knew what he was doing. Insurgent was an intense, romantic, and amazing movie and I could gush about it for hours. There were some parts of the book they left out but the basic storyline still rang true.

movieFor those who have not seen the movies or read the books I will describe the plot. In the Divergent world, it has been 200 years from a terrible war. To ensure peace the world has been divided into groups, or as they call them, factions by personality; Abnegation (self-less), Erudite (intelligent), Candor (honest), Amity (kind), and Dauntless (brave). The main character, Tris Prior, grew up in the abnegation faction but on her sixteenth birthday she must take a test to determine what her true faction is. While taking the test it is discovered that she is divergent, meaning she fits into more than one faction. Divergents are thought to be dangerous to this world because they screw up the faction-based peace system. So, Tris must pick one faction and try to hide who she truly is. The second installment, Insurgent, picks up with the fight between divergents and those in charge.

Miles Teller who plays Peter, a member of Dauntless, is a definite stand out in this movie. His character makes bold choices and has a killer sense of humor. Shailene Woodley, who plays Tris Prior, is fabulous like she is in every movie. The raw emotion she brings to this film proves she was the right choice for such a bold, brave, and complicated character. Although Ansel Elgort, who plays Caleb Prior, is not in the movie as much as I would hope, the scenes he are in stand out through his strong, emotional acting capabilities. Plus, he’s very cute, and that never hurts.

I encourage anyone who loves dystopian (post-apocalyptic) adventure to read these books and of course, see the movies.
