Prolific author, John Grisham, has a new legal offering with Gray Mountain. Samantha Kofer never saw the recession of 2008 coming. When she loses her job at a Wall Street law firm, she goes to work for a legal aid clinic in Brady, VA, in the Appalachians. Although she isn’t getting paid, reward and life lessons come from helping people with real problems.

We don’t always like our heroines to be sweet. Take Susan Hogan, a very prickly and impatient Texas college English teacher. This doesn’t work in her favor when a coed’s body is found in her car. Now she’s really got something to get defensive about! Suddenly, she finds she’s being stalked, nearly run over and someone kills her plants; nothing doing but to find the killer and save her reputation. Judy Alter presents a tale of greed, lust and obsession in The Perfect Coed, book one of the Oak Grove Mysteries.

When Marc Bowman is fired from his consultant job for communication corporate giant AmerTel, he expects his wife to have his back. She’s a high powered executive for the same company but she’s siding with the execs. Suddenly, there are strange men following him, items disappear and the FBI shows up at his home. When his wife disappears, Marc has to figure things out on his own. Run to the bookstore and check out Andrew Grant’s Run.

The Chicago Tribune says Archer Mayor is producing the best police procedural being written in America. High praise. His 25th Joe Gunther novel, Proof Positive, deals with a Vietnam vet with PTSD. The man hides in his house and hoards until a pile falls on him and crushes him. When his niece takes his wartime photos for an art project, two hit men come out of the shadows to find missing negatives. Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team race to protect the young woman from the same fate as her uncle.

The military also comes into play in Carole Price’s Sour Grapes. Cait, who has inherited a vineyard and outdoor theatre in Livermore, CA, is putting on a Shakespearean play but gets no sleep when her new security alarm goes off in the middle of the night. The security technician comes the next morning to check it out and discovers a halberd and knife on the ground. The knife is familiar to Cait because it’s the same military knife the bank robber had whom she shot and killed two years ago when she was a cop in Ohio. Cait again teams up with Navy SEAL Royal Tanner to solve the puzzle in this 2nd Shakespeare in the Vineyard mystery. The show must go on!

Readers actually visit Shakespeare’s era in C.W. Gortner’s The Tudor Vendetta. Elizabeth has just become queen and summons exiled spy Brendan Prescott to her court. She wants him to track down her lady in waiting who disappeared during a visit to her family manor in Yorkshire. As he investigates he realizes uncovering the truth buried in Vaughn Hall could lead to Elizabeth’s destruction. A must-read for those who like a little history with their mystery!
