Dolphin Tale 2 is a sequel to the first Dolphin Tale movie and is based on a true story about the dolphin Winter. Sawyer, who was also in the first movie and helped save Winter, now works at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He is training new volunteers to help out at the aquarium.
Winter’s dolphin friend, Panama, was very old and passed away and this has put Winter into a deep depression. She stopped eating and refused to wear her prosthetic tail. This jeopardizes her health and everyone is worried about her. Her exhibit must be closed till they can help her. Dolphins are not allowed to be alone when in captivity so they will be forced to send her to another aquarium if she isn’t paired. Recently they rescued a new dolphin, Mandy, but after she recovered she was well enough to send back to the ocean and Dr. Clay, played by Harry Connick Jr., knows this is the right move to make. However, his daughter Hazel is very unhappy at first because she is afraid Winter will be transferred.
During all this, Sawyer is offered a full scholarship for a semester at sea program. He is uncertain whether to accept considering all that has been going on with Winter. Then Dr. Clay gets a call about a young dolphin, Hope, whom they are hopeful may become Winter’s new companion and save her from the transfer. This new venture isn’t without struggles along the way however. Hope is uncertain about Winter and goes into a frenzy.
I love dolphins and found this movie quite interesting. The story is slow but if you are interested in sea life and dolphins this is definitely worth going to see. It’s great for kids too because it sparks their interest in learning more. My six-year-old daughter now is inspired to write a story about Dolphins for her school project. It is great knowing their main goal is to rehabilitate these rescued sea animals so that they can go back home, and that the only ones that are kept at the aquarium are those that can’t survive in the ocean anymore. Perhaps someday I will meet Winter and Hope in person at the aquarium in Clearwater, Florida.
