The Reedley College Tigers opened the 2014 football season with a 37-16 win over Mendocino College Saturday night at Reedley High School Stadium.
It’s only one game, I know, but the rush of enthusiasm that blew through the stands like a mighty rushing wind was palpable, and at least partially erased the bad memories of last season’s 1-9 record.
Sophomore Quarterback Sean Stell Jr. (Washington Union High) threw three first half touchdown passes to freshman wide receiver Rafael Araujo-Lopes, and the Tigers never looked back. Stell also ran for a third quarter touchdown. Jason Pierre had a sixty-yard touchdown run as well.
When your offense racks up 37 points, that’s usually all you need to talk about, but the Tiger defense was outstanding as well. In particular, the secondary was terrific. The Tiger corners and safeties were repeatedly stride for stride with Mendocino’s wide receivers, and broke up many potential long gains.
All in all, it was a great opening night for Reedley College’s players, head coach Randy Whited, and new offensive coordinator Ernie Rodriguez. After already matching last year’s win total, the Tigers will head to San Jose this next Saturday to face San Jose City College at six p.m.
