How to Train Your Dragon 2 takes place five years after the first movie. It starts out with a Dragon race which has become a favorite sport of the Island of Berk. However, Hiccup and toothless are nowhere to be seen.

movieHiccup has created his own invention of wings he is using to try to fly. But, it’s a work in progress and toothless has to save him from a potentially bad fall out of the sky every time he uses them. His friend, Astrid goes looking for Hiccup and they both end up discovering dragon trappers, Eret and his gang, who capture Dragons for the evil Drago Bludvist, who is trying to control all Dragons. When Hiccup’s father finds out he wants the villagers to prepare for battle but Hiccup believes he can talk to Drago and convince him that Dragons are good. Unfortunately, his plan fails but on his journey to stop him he meets Valka, a dragon rider who turns out to be his mother whom he thought was dead. She has been rescuing captured dragons and taking them to a safe haven created by the Alpha Bewilderbeast who leads all dragons except the baby dragons who listen to nobody. However, Drago finds them and the captured Bewilderbeast he has in his control fights the Alpha and gains control over all dragons including Toothless. Hiccup and his friends ride the baby dragons back to the village to fight Drago and save the dragons from his control.

I enjoyed the depth of the second movie and the attention that they gave to the details. They did an excellent job choosing the voices for the characters. However, I found this movie to be better suited for older children and adults, as a lot of the storyline would go right over the heads of younger audiences.

My favorite parts involved the relationship of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless. A lot can be understood by how well the expressions and mannerisms in their actions came across. I have always been a fan of fantasy involving dragons and this movie does not disappoint.
