In the sporting arena, sometimes you lose because you simply don’t execute well. Sometimes you lose because you suffer a run of bad luck. And then there are the times when you lose simply because you faced a superior opponent, Such was the case Saturday night when the Reedley College Tigers were defeated by the Fresno City College Rams, 48-7.
The annual “Battle For the Pump” was actually a pretty good battle in the first half. The Rams scored the game’s first two touchdowns, but the Tigers came back with a touchdown drive of their own, and trailed 14-7 with about four minutes remaining in the half. That’s when Fresno turned up the effort.
A late first half touchdown, followed by three unanswered scores in the third quarter meant another lopsided loss for Reedley College, and an 0-3 record. The Tigers have been outscored 141-39 in their first three games of the 2013 season. That’s too many points given up combined with not enough offense – a lethal combination.
Things should get a little easier for the Tigers here on out. They face Sacramento City College at Reedley High School Stadium this Saturday night at seven, then travel to Monterey Peninsula on the road on October 5. Both of those games are winnable for Coach randy Whited’s squad.
A rehash of statistics from the Fresno game are unnecessary at this point. Fresno was the better team. Period. The Tigers need to turn the page and get things going in the right direction, and do it quickly.
