Just when it looked like the Reedley College Tigers would get off the canvas and score their first win of the season, the Tigers biggest 2010 bugaboo – giving up big plays – jumped up and bit them.
Daryl Copeland’s 66-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes left in the game nullified a great comeback, as the Tigers lost to Cabrillo College 26-25 in Aptos.
Down 20-3 in the second quarter, the Tigers got going in the right direction with an 82-yard drive, culminating with a 14-yard touchdown run by Freshman Nigel Simmons. Simmons and fellow running back Josh Andrews provided the Tigers with a terrific one-two punch in the backfield as they combined for 230 yards rushing and two TD’s from Simmons. Quarterback Jeff Kidd also had a nice game, passing for 208 yards and running for another 30.
In fact, if you didn’t know the final score and looked at the stat sheet, you would figure the Tigers won by a couple of touchdowns. But such was not the case, as Cabrillo was generally limited on offense, but got enough big plays to pull out the win. Reedley out gained Cabrillo 453-376, and had 25 first downs to 14 for Cabrillo.
But the only stat that counts is the final score, and now the Tigers face the prospect of having to go 6-1 over their final seven games in order to be Bowl eligible. It can be done, but there are still some issues on defense to take care of. At least the Tigers can look forward to staying at home for a while. They open a three game home stand this coming Saturday against West Hills College at seven p.m. at Reedley High school Stadium.
