A football team, even in a loss, can usually find something positive to take away from every game. But you would be hard pressed to find anything positive in Saturday night’s performance by the Reedley College Tigers.
Put simply, nothing worked for the Tigers as they were pummeled early and often in a 51-10 loss to the College of San Mateo Bulldogs.
Rush defense was a problem in week one, but it was the heavily bloated elephant in the room against San Mateo, as the Tigers surrendered an astonishing 459 yards on the ground. San Mateo Quarterbacks Julian Bernard and Miles Freeman combined for 213 rushing yards, including a 74-yard touchdown run by Freeman for the Bulldog’s final points.
Offensively, the Tigers were, well…. pretty offensive. As was the case in week one, the Tigers showed occasional explosiveness, but couldn’t put together a sustained scoring drive until late in the game when backup Quarterback Taylor Genuser led them to their only touchdown of the game, a two yard touchdown run by Robbie Burbank.
On Special Teams, the Tigers were OK, except for surrendering a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown on the first play of the second half. Kicker Ivan Torres, filling in for the injured Curtis O’Neill, drilled a 42-yard field goal, and punter Tommy Cater had a good game as well.
OK, I searched and searched and found a silver lining. The Tigers also got off to a slow start last season, going 0-2, before rebounding and winning the Valley Conference title. So it can be done.
The Tigers now have to lick their wounds, work on righting their ship and try to get going in the right direction Saturday, on the road against Cabrillo College.
