Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, and Jim Carrey star in this comedy about magicians and the increasing absurdity of magic tricks in recent years. Steve Carell plays the incredible Burt Wonderstone an aging, disgruntled, and pompous magician who is no longer relevant in today’s world where the new magic tricks are doing crazy stunts with your body. Steve Buscemi is his childhood partner Anton, with Olivia Wilde playing the stereotypical magician’s assistant. Jim Carrey is the antagonist, lampooning people like David Blaine, and Criss Angel, delivers the breakout and most enjoyable aspects of the movie.
The comedy in the movie is hit and miss. And the emotional and story aspects of the film are also a bit clichéd and predictable. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t an enjoyable film. I always enjoy Steve Carell’s acting, even when he is playing a douche bag that learns a lesson. And I absolutely loved the digs at people like Criss Angel who merely do outrageous stunts with their bodies and call it magic. That brings me to Jim Carrey. He was my favorite part of the movie, because it was awesome to see the actor return to doing the best physical comedy he can do. In recent years, Jim Carrey has been in some not so good films, now it seems he has decided to take more supportive roles that are freaking hilarious. There was one sequence that just had me laughing for minutes, that reminded me of how good a comedic actor Jim Carrey can be.
I also have to acknowledge that at this point Olivia Wilde doesn’t seem to be playing any characters but herself, which isn’t a bad thing because she seems like a rad person. I am waiting for that one role or character where I don’t see Olivia Wilde but the actual character on screen. Overall in a weekend where there isn’t much to see, Burt Wonderstone isn’t a bad choice to have.
