Many college football coaches believe that the biggest improvement in a team comes between the first and second game of the season. If that’s actually true, the Reedley College football team is in serious trouble.
The Tigers played their home opener Saturday night and were thoroughly dominated by San Joaquin Delta by a score of 45-17–the Tigers’ ninth straight defeat dating back to last season. And truth be told, the game wasn’t actually that close. The Tigers scored two touchdowns late in the game, when Delta had their second and third string defensive players on the field. The Tiger defense had no answer for the Mustang offense, either on the ground or through the air. Mustang quarterback Sam Hutsell was 20-26 through the air for 290 yards and four touchdowns. The Mustangs also gained 169 yards rushing.
The Tiger offense struggled to sustain any drives when the game was still close. Quarterback Ian Hall fumbled several times and he and backup quarterback Sean Stell combined for just 144 yards passing and one touchdown to go with two interceptions.
It’s still too early to say this is going to be another tough season for the Tigers, but they need to get the defense tightened up, and find some consistency on offense. And they better do it quickly. The next Tiger opponent is Fresno City College this coming Saturday night at seven at Reedley High School.
