The Reedley College Tigers took a huge step toward playing in a post season bowl game with an exciting 34-27 win over Merced College Saturday night at Reedley High School Stadium.
The Tigers’ last post season game was the 2009 Nor-Cal Championship game against San Mateo, but with Saturday night’s win over Merced, the Tigers (5-3) will be bowl eligible by winning one of their last two regular season games.
It was another head scratching performance by the Reedley offense. They marched down the field with ease and scored a touchdown on their first possession. After that, the offense went to sleep for the rest of the half, but the defense was superb, and Reedley led 7-0 at halftime.
Both teams got the offense going in the second half. Merced changed quarterbacks and rebounded quickly. Reedley quarterback Austen Bray got dialed in and was outstanding, completing 17 of 30 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Robert Avery rushed for over one hundred yards, and Terrell McLaughlin caught five passes for 104 yards and a score. McLaughlin also had a key catch on third down to keep the Tigers’ game winning drive alive.
So here’s the deal for Reedley – they face undefeated Hartnell this Saturday in Salinas, and then end the regular season at home against Monterey Peninsula on November 15. A win in either of those games gets the Tigers into the post season.
