This week Coming Attractions spotlights several authors and DorothyL members who are heading to Bouchercon in November. Attendees come from all over, and so do their novels!
We get a glimpse of British Columbia and the Sea to Sky highway in the third Hunter Rayne Highway Mystery Series. Rayne, a former Canadian Mountie homicide detective now hits the highways behind the wheel of a big rig. This time he’s heading out to do a little skiing on Whistler Mountain. But a corpse on the chairlift puts him at the top of the suspect list. And, who shows up but a woman from his past. This “uplifting” mystery is by R.E. Donald. (California readers might want to check out the second in the series, Ice on the Grapevine.)
The mountains of Colorado are featured in Peg Brantley’s The Sacrifice. Mex Anderson is trying to cope with the murder of family members. The former lawman leaves Mexico to find solace in the Rocky Mountains. The head of a drug cartel entices him with an offer that will reveal the murderers. But, is revenge enough? The Sacrifice is nominated for the Colorado Author’s League and Colorado Book Awards.
Park County, Tennessee is our next destination. Everyone’s getting ready for July 4, and Sheriff Tony Abernathy is hoping for a quiet one. Those hopes are squelched when a body is found up a tree and another in a greenhouse. Wife Theo gathers clues at her quilt shop, aka “gossip central.” Murder by Sunlight is the fifth in Barbara Graham’s quilting series. Pattern included.
In Brooklyn, Erica Donato works at a history museum. Her life is full as a single mom to a teenager, studying as a grad student and working her way up the museum ladder. The murder of a family friend finds her cataloging letters from his contact at the Tiffany studios. What’s the connection to the off-limits mausoleum with stunning stained glass? Triss Stein has us shivering with anticipation in Donato’s second outing, Brooklyn Graves.

Ice on the Grapevine sounds like my kind of mystery. I like reading about detectives with complicated personal lives b/c they seem more real.
Also, Hunter Rayne somewhat reminds me of Jesse Stone, the protagonist in Robert Parker’s novels. I loved Tom Selleck as Stone. I haven’t read any of the novels but enjoyed the TV film adaptations. They are slow-paced and atmospheric.
A corpse on a chairlift, love it!
