The Reedley College Tigers suffered their second straight loss to open the 2011 season as they fell to College of San Mateo 48-14 Saturday afternoon in San Mateo.
In their opening week loss to Foothill College it was the lack of pass defense that got the Tigers into early trouble, and against San Mateo, it was rush defense that let them down. The Bulldogs accumulated an astonishing 487 yards on the ground, led by Kenya Price, who ran the ball only eight times, but amassed 188 yards. The Bulldogs didn’t do anything tricky; in fact it was the same play – a sweep to the left or the right – that repeatedly caused the Tigers problems.
Offensively, the Tigers didn’t get anything going until the outcome was already decided. They scored the final two touchdowns of the game – a touchdown run by Joshua Andrews and a TD pass from Mike Ferrara-Weed to Tereso Guevara – in the final minutes of the game.
The Tigers have to regroup and regroup fast if they want to make something of a season that has gotten off to a very poor start. They can console themselves a little with the fact that they’ve faced two very good opponents, but improvements on defense have to come quickly.
The Tigers next opponent is Cabrillo College this Saturday night at seven p.m. at Reedley High School Stadium.
