Mystery Current & Coming Attractions: August 2025

Throughout my childhood my mother was deathly afraid of cats. I don’t know if her fear stemmed from an adverse experience in her youth, or from her upbringing which was deeply rooted in cultural superstitions. But, I do know that I was taught to disregard cats as an objectionable animal, at least when I was around my mother. When I went riding at the equestrian barn it was a different story. The semi-feral cats that patrolled the grounds looking to control the rodent population, with their mesmerizing eyes and wolverine-like claws, adored me. I was a cat magnet for their affection despite my severe allergies and my emotional resistance, given my allegiance to their human foe—my mother.

Slowly, I began to see cats as functional pets you owned if you lived in the country but no one I knew growing up owned one. That is, until I was 18 and I had moved out of my childhood home and into a studio apartment that I got for super cheap. Within a week of occupying said apartment, I learned why it was so cheap when I discovered holes in my cereal boxes at breakfast one morning. Frightened I had a mouse infestation I called a beloved maternal aunt for assistance. She offered to bring over her cat, Pickles, to naturally control the situation. I was gobsmacked! Not meaning to, I shouted into the phone, “When did you get a cat? You know mom will never come over now. She’ll probably forbid me to come over too.” She was laughing, despite my lack of decorum, as she casually commented that Pickles is always locked away before my mother ever comes over, and that for the past 10 years she’s been none-the-wiser, so why would my mother catch on now.

This well-hidden secret unleashed a Pandora’s Box of mistrustful thoughts. How many more secrets had auntie withheld from me—withheld from my mother! Later, while Pickles patrolled my apartment auntie sat in my kitchen chuckling at me periodically while my thoughts continued to spiral with images of family betrayal and questioning. After all, what would I tell my mother about the method I used to rid myself of what she called my “Mickey” problem. I mean, when I moved out I had to vow I’d never get a cat, otherwise she’d never come visit. I’d even gone so far as to be cat-avoidant, even avoiding cozy mysteries with them in it. Until today that is.

Part of the KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge is for me to take myself out of my comfort zone and rejuvenate my love of reading in the process. To shake off old reading norms and habits I’ve formed for new ones. During the month of May the KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge focused on sleuthing canines. Well, it’s been two months and I feel it’s imperative to acknowledge that the mystery world has an equally dedicated furry sidekick with comparable detecting skills that deserves to be acknowledged.

So, I’m focusing the theme of the KRL Coming Attractions Reading Challenge for August on cozy mysteries with feline sleuths and familiars. And in honor of this being our eighth month of the challenge, and my history of neglectful behavior towards the focus of our challenge, I’ve taken a momentary departure from our Featured Five and will instead be presenting a Suggested Seven. You’ll find a wide range of books that incorporate cats from the traditional cozy mystery to the paracozy. I am absolutely a smitten-kitten (I couldn’t resist) with every title I’ve suggested, and I’m really looking forward to this month’s reads. As always, if my Suggested Seven don’t appeal to you, please check out the amazing new releases and soon-to-be released books on offer for August.

So much for a peaceful next chapter: Novice witch Bex Merriweather has her hands full running a lending library and secretly studying magic under the critical eye of her opinionated familiar and mentor, cat Cosmo. The last thing newly divorced perimenopausal Bex needs is more tasks needing her attention. But when a podcast connects a pirate treasure and magic with tranquil Willowmere and treasure hunters as well as occultists flock to the town, feuds erupt. When a dead body is found, Bex and Cosmo can’t discount the idea that greed and black magic had something to do with the murder. But can she protect her secret and the town without exposing the truth about her inheritance? And is somebody already on her trail – somebody wishing her ill? With only her cat and her trusted circle of friends, Bex sets out to catch a killer before the treasure claims another victim. — Axes and Alchemy by Carmen Radtke

Twenty-something Kinley Remington has problems. She’s stuck in a dead-end job at the local bank with a terror of a boss, but she’s too timid to try to look for something elsewhere. Whether or not she stays at the bank is taken out of her hands when she is fired for leaving 80-something heiress Miss Penelope Slope in the bank’s vault alone. Shortly after, Miss Penelope’s priceless diamond necklace comes up missing. Kinley feels horrible and goes straight to Miss Penelope’s mansion to apologize only to learn that Miss Penelope took the necklace herself. Surrounded by the many cats from her cat rescue, Miss Penelope promises Kinley she will clear up the misunderstanding with Kinley’s employer. However before Miss Penelope can make things right, she is murdered in her own home with only the cats as witnesses. Kinley was the last person to see Miss Penelope alive and they are looking to her for answers and as a suspect… Kinley must play sleuth if she doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life in prison. And the cat rescue? That’s on Kinley’s shoulders too. For the first time in her life, Kinley Remington will have to take control of her life and make decisions to save herself and Miss Penelope’s cats. — Caturday Crime by Amanda Flower

After a long, snowy winter on Daybreak Island, Maddie and her cat cafe crew are finally ready to embrace the spring, though life is anything but calm. With Val and Ethan’s wedding taking center stage, Maddie finds herself juggling wedding plans alongside a new and unexpected venture—a generous donation has made her the co-owner of a traveling cat cafe truck. To kick off the new chapter, she seizes the chance to take the truck on its inaugural trip to a cat literary festival in Provincetown, accompanied by her family and some of the shelter crew. The festival is organized by the renowned cat-romance author Jasmine Prescott, who also runs a beloved cat rescue foundation on Cape Cod. But when Jasmine’s longtime friend and fellow author Vivi St. Clair arrives with a boatload full of drama—everything from a dangerous ex-husband to an unwanted Netflix crew—tensions run high. At first, it seems like just another dose of celebrity chaos—until Vivi is found murdered. As new evidence ties Maddie and her cat cafe into the investigation, Maddie must dig deeper into the tangled web of secrets, rivalries, and feline-friendly drama to uncover the truth. The question is: what’s the connection between the cat cafe and Vivi’s untimely death? — Claws Out by Cate Conte, St. Martins

Darcy is ready to step away from public office and return to the quiet life of bookstore shelves, family dinners, and the occasional ghostly whisper. But peace is short-lived in Misty Hollow. When bestselling author Harlan Harrington invites Darcy and her husband, Jon, to dinner at the infamous (and allegedly haunted) Gershwin Mansion, they arrive to find the door ajar… and Harlan nowhere to be found. A locked room, strange whispers in the hallways, and a creeping sense that something, or someone, is watching sets Darcy on edge. As clues unfold and secrets bubble to the surface, Darcy must rely on her intuition, her ghostly connections, and the help of her ever-curious cat Tiptoe to unravel the truth. — Death Could Tell a Story by K. J. Emrick, South Coast Publishing

Bexley Cosgrove has a soft spot for abandoned animals after being abandoned herself as a young child. She knows she owes her life to the dog that found and rescued her, so as an adult, Bexley has committed her life to rescuing as many dogs and cats as possible. In book two of the new series, small items from the Seattle adoption center seem to keep turning up missing. After a bit of investigation, security cameras reveal that a black cat seems to be sneaking in at night to take whatever items might catch his eye. Bexley and her team are stumped as to his means of getting into the store, so Bexley comes up with a plan to track him down. She eventually determines that the cat is living on the street and has in fact built himself a nest which he has filled with various items stolen from businesses in the area. Once of the items Bexley finds in the cat’s nest is a bracelet that was last seen on the arm of a teen that went missing more than three weeks prior, and another item found in the nest will provide a new clue in a very old murder case. — Klepto Kitty by Kathi Daley,

Lights! Camera! Murder? Mitzy Moon let herself get too comfortable. After happily putting down roots in Pin Cherry Harbor, this psychic sleuth thought she’d be safe. If only she’d paid closer attention to the whisperings of her not-as-dearly-departed-as-everyone-thinks grandmother. Without warning, Mitzy and her fiendish feline find themselves the stars in a television series about their life! Grams sold the rights, and the production has descended on the bookshop. The inept crew disturbs the wrong crypt, and now a vengeful spirit could be on the loose. Can Mitzy flip the script on this murderer, or will this be her final scene? — Scripts and Empty Crypts by Trixie Silvertale, Sittin’ On A Goldmine Productions LLC

Our cozy small town on Maui has a new mystery: the suspicious death of one of our dearest Red Hat ladies.
