Encore Theatre Company is excited to present Matilda the Musical for their 2023 summer production. While the long running theatre performs productions throughout the year, it has built a strong reputation for big musicals in the summer. That trend continues with Matilda, a production filled with huge musical numbers, exciting special effects, and a talented cast of all ages.
For those unfamiliar with the story, according to the MTI website, Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, Miss Honey. During her first term, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognize and appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however, the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves to punish those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!
Most people are aware of Matilda’s story from the 1996 film starring Danny DeVito and Pam Ferris. But the musical is inspired by the 1988 British novel by Roald Dahl. It premiered on Broadway in 2013 and was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, winning five.
This production’s director, Susan Burley, knew the incredible potential of this musical for the community, but she needed to find a group of talented kids to execute her vision! She is excited to have cast a variety of energetic, talented, and charismatic kids to bring the characters to life. Leading the way is Molly McAllister starring as Matilda. At only eight years old, Molly is demonstrating commitment and talent far beyond her age. She loves performing with her father, Dave McAllister, starring opposite her as Miss Agatha Trunchbull. Her mother Katie is in the ensemble and sister Ellie is performing as Bruce! They are one of eight families in the cast, creating a fun and infectious environment the audience will surely feel.Alongside the children (and Trunchbull) are a group of incredibly talented adults that audiences won’t soon forget. Brooke Rogers is an indescribably brilliant Miss Honey, while Chris Machado and Carrie Bryant will have you laughing out loud as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. Backed by a dynamic ensemble, this cast is a powerhouse of performers.
Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs, and unforgettable performances, Matilda is a production you don’t want to miss. Children and adults alike will be captivated by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.
Performances are 6/30-7/15, with evening and matinee options, at Encore Theatre in Tulare, CA. For tickets, please go to www.encoretulare.org or call 559-686-1300.
