Oz The Great and Powerful is a fantasy adventure movie based on the Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. This story takes place before the popular Wizard of Oz movie from 1939 starring Judy Garland. Oz the Great and Powerful stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, also known as Oz.

The movie begins in black and white and tells of Oscar’s small time magician act with the circus. He ends up being chased by another circus person who is mad at him for hitting on his girlfriend. Oscar runs and gets in an air balloon to escape but then is whirled away in a tornado which takes him to the land of Oz. Oz is portrayed in a beautiful world of color. Oz is mistaken for the Great Wizard to be sent to save the world of Oz and he goes along with it as he thinks he will get great riches.

At first he meets the witch Theodora played by Mila Kunis who begins the movie falling in love with him. He later discovers that her sister is the evil witch and joins forces with Glinda the good witch played by Michelle Williams to save Oz. Theodora’s story is more complicated then just black and white so you just have to see the movie to discover how her story unfolds.

Oz meets a lot of fun characters on his adventures, he befriends a flying monkey in a bellhop suit, voiced by Zach Braff, whom he saves from a lion. Next he comes across a little glass girl who lost her family because of the evil witch. I like how Oscar goes from being selfish to someone who really wants to help. He uses his bag of magic tricks to help save Oz. I really enjoy the various stories based on the OZ novels and hope to see them continue on with more movies in the future.
