West Side Story

by Lorie Lewis Ham

The musical West Side Story opened last weekend at the Reedley Opera House, presented by Reedley’s River City Theatre Co. This cast has the distinction of being made up primarily of high school and college students, making them closer to the actual age of the characters they are playing, giving this show an extra bit of realism.

The San Joaquin Valley is very rich in great theatre all year long and we at KRL enjoy covering it and sharing our finds with our readers. As part of our 5th anniversary celebration, it seemed a perfect time to highlight some of the great shows coming to the Valley this summer! We are also giving away tickets to four of these shows so you can celebrate with us.

Sharks and Jets. Street gangs. Turf war. Romeo & Juliet in the streets of New York City. “Tonight.” “Somewhere.” Mambo. Yep, it’s West Side Story, and it’s a Good Company Players production at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater, playing through September 14.

On March 15, the musical West Side Story hits the PAT stage at Reedley High School. This show is filled with great classic songs such as “Maria,” “Something’s Coming,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Tonight,” and “Somewhere.”

West Side Story has steadily become one of my all time favorite musicals. I love everything about it, from the music to the characters to all the varying emotions, I love every minute. These feelings were reaffirmed when the Jets and Sharks took the stage in the fantastic and exhilarating prologue scene at the Saroyan Theater in Fresno this week.

I enjoy seeing all the Facebook posts and pictures on Instagram of people having fun over Christmas break almost as much as I hate the fact that I didn’t do much over Christmas break. Those of you that know me know my family. Those of you who know my family are fully aware of our many…shall we say mishaps?
