Recap July & August Concerts and Events

Summer has officially drawn to a close. This will go down as a memorable one for the books. As we prepare for the Fall season consisting of football, pumpkin spiced-everything, school, and autumn leaves, may we not forget the eventful summer that precedes it. The months of June and July set the bar very high, and as August closes its doors, it was a good finale of what was a spectacular summer for entertainment.

There is No Secret—STYX Has Still Got It

One of the defining hits for the classic rock band Styx is “Fooling Yourself” (The Angry Young Man), and it has a lyric that goes, “And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it. You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it.” For the 1,500 fans that attended the Styx concert at the Bakersfield Fox Theater on January 15, there was no fooling or kidding them to believe that even after 40-plus years in the music business, the Chicago rock ensemble continues to thrive, and their live show is proof of that.

Although he may only be 40 years old, 16 years as a police detective in Ostend, Belgium, have taken a toll on both Rafael Styx's body and his life. Arthritis cripples his bones and fills every movement with pain, and on the Job he is known for accepting bribes and being unnecessarily brutal. Styx's wife simmers unnoticed with anger due to his affairs and neglect, while his teenaged son rarely utters a few words that aren't filled with hostility. Styx barely manages to tolerate his rookie partner, whose fashion sense and adherence to rules represents everything Styx loathes in the new generation of detectives.
