Are You Rogueing This Year?

by Mallory Moad

‘Rogueing' isn't a dance move, fad diet, or the latest hip exercise program. Simply put, it's attending performances at Fresno's Rogue Performance Festival, commonly known as just “the Rogue.” Although its popularity has continued to increase, there are still people around here who haven't heard of this showcase of independent performance. If you are a member of that group, you've been missing out on one of the most innovative events in Fresno, so keep reading. If you're a Rogue regular, you know what I'm talking about, but keep reading anyway.

Rogue Festival 2016: How I managed to break “Hamlet”

by Tim Mooney

Since 1997, I’ve had this love affair going on with the works of Molière. Starting with Tartuffe, I began writing new English variations of his plays in rhymed iambic pentameter. Re-writing The Miser, The Doctor in Spite of Himself, The Imaginary Invalid, The Misanthrope, and about a dozen others, I seemed to have found my niche in life…writing and, eventually, performing Molière’s plays, often playing the roles that he himself played 350 years ago. It was a short leap from there to creating my first one-man show, Molière than Thou. I’ve been touring Molière than Thou since the Fall of 2002.

Rogue Festival 2016: Is Your Therapist Near A Bakery?

by Susan Gill

Is Your Therapist Near A Bakery? started out as a funny story I told at a birthday roast for my son on his 24th birthday. Considering that my father was a serial suicide attempter, who “had the urge, but not the talent for suicide,” my sister had a borderline personality that always wandered over the border, and my brother’s story is too dark to tell until the end of the show, the humor throughout the piece is surprising and welcomed. The audience cries a little knowing a laugh will arrive in the next minute.

by Melanie Gall

When you hear the name Sophie Tucker, what comes to mind?
The eccentric older woman who appeared regularly on the Ed Sullivan Show; the real-life subject of the tribute show that launched Bette Midler’s career; the famous vaudevillian who influenced Ethel Merman, Joan Rivers, and Carol Channing?
