Hallowe’en: Some History & A Little Collecting

Halloween is the night before All Hallow’s Day or Hallowmas which occurs on November 1. Today, those of us in the modern church call this All Saints Day. This is a time we remember and celebrate the lives of the faithful men and women who have recently passed away. The feast day was established by Pope Gregory III around the 8th century. Halloween, or to be more correct, Hallowe’en is short for Hallows Eve.

It's October, Halloween is just around the corner and everywhere you go, it's all about the pumpkins. If you've really got that autumn feeling down in your bones and feel the need to celebrate those orange gourds, Farmer Billy Bob Hobb's Pumpkin Grove is the place for you (and your kids, too). Since 2010, the Pumpkin Grove has provided a family-friendly alternative to the scary, night time haunted-house attractions that are all the rage with teenagers and adults but are too intense for children.

Those orangey globes of goodness are rolling your way, and they come in many forms (KRL had pumpkin latte recipes, already). Not that I have anything against jack-o-lanterns! I love an opportunity to stab something with a carving knife and not run the risk of jail time, but I want a pumpkin I can eat and so began the Great Pumpkin Food Search. This Food Quest sent me to fast-food emporiums, family restaurants, warehouse stores, and–oddly enough–college.

How I Met My Dinner: October Means Pumpkins!

Pumpkin has become synonymous with October. Besides being a term of endearment, pumpkin can morph into a pastry or a pie, sweet or savory entrees, a drink or a dessert. It seems like any eating establishment that wants to stay up to date is offering a pumpkin treat of some sort. Even my local Vietnamese sandwich shop is offering a seasonal Pumpkin Spice café au lait!

Halloween season is finally upon us and there are a lot of great things to enjoy during this month, whether you are a fan of the scary side of Halloween and head out to Hobb's Grove, or like less scary options like attending Zoo Boo (watch for an article on this coming soon), fun Halloween crafts at the library, or perhaps heading out to Hillcrest Tree Farm & Railroad to get a pumpkin and enjoy the fun family things they have going on there this time of year. This week we are chatting with one of the owners of Hillcrest, Melissa Bautista, about their Pumpkin Patch.

The gold medal for all-around wonderful kitty could easily go to darling Chicken Little! This cutiepie never misses an opportunity to hoot it up with her friends, explore any nook or cranny, and make it her mission to check out whatever happens to be going on. Chicken Little came along way after suffering a toe injury calling for immediate amputation. She's all better now and you can't even notice she's missing a rear toe. What an adorable combination she is of fun-loving spirit and sweet, deep affection, a girl who will easily capture hearts in a forever family that cherishes her.
