Covid-19 is scary enough and has us all wearing masks. Grab some candy, a pumpkin spice latte, and settle down with these Halloween reads. Many came out earlier, but I saved them for you as a treat!

As far as dog shows go, Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden is top in the country, the oldest, and most prestigious. Dog handlers and owners vie for the chance to show and perhaps win or place.

Melanie Travis has a complicated family life. Most people do, but her family takes it to extremes. She has an ex-husband and a shared pre-teen son. Ex has married Claire who is now one of Melanie’s best friends. Melanie has Sam, her husband of a few years. They share Kevin, a toddler who is a champion at getting into messes. Aunt Peg, well, she’s of the opinion she knows everything and everyone which is pretty much true.

Like Melanie Travis doesn’t have enough to do with two sons, thirteen-year-old Davie and four-year-old Kevin. She also has a husband, Sam, an overbearing Aunt Peg, and five black standard Poodles—and Bud, the mixed breed dog found by the side of the road. He was to be a temp but never left. Kev considers Bud to be his dog. Now Melanie has the idea to start a book club. What could go wrong?

Lounging next to the ocean, a mountain stream, or on the patio, now’s the time to start a new series or catch up with an old favorite. Enjoy!

It’s springtime in Connecticut and that means dog shows. Melanie Travis, husband Sam, sons Davey and Kev, and Aunt Peg are regulars on the circuit as Davey tries for the last points needed to finish Augie’s championship.

Melanie Travis tries to live a calm life, but with five standard Poodles, a terrier, a son from a previous marriage, a supportive second husband and a four-year-old boy, it’s about impossible. Add in her Aunt Peg, former Poodle breeder, current dog show judge, and ever a critic, Melanie’s school work, and an impulsive brother, and she’s got her hands full.

Puppy Fest is set up similar to the annual Puppy Super Bowl. It’s a fundraiser for a local shelter run by Jane Brody. Her dad is Lou Brody, always referred to that way, never as Dad. Lou was married three times and has nine kids. They know how much he’s worth and none of them, including grandkids, are happy about the amount of money he’s left to charity in his will. Of late, he’s given thought to increasing that amount which in turn, increases their unhappiness.

Melanie is barely back at Howard Academy as a tutor for special-needs kids when the principal decides she’s the perfect person to oversee the annual Christmas bazaar—which is only a week away, the previous chairwoman having just eloped to Cabo with her lawyer. Luckily, Melanie is well liked by the teachers and parents, so all are willing to pitch in to help. The only snag is that the Santa hired for Pet Photos with Santa cancels the day before the bazaar. Before Melanie can panic, the principal says a substitute called and volunteered to do the job.

Davey is twelve years old now and a good big brother to two year old Kevin. In a household of the two boys, husband Sam, six black standard Poodles and an often drop by ex-husband, it’s a wonder Melanie ever gets anything done. Over the years, she’s learned to go with the flow.
