Bear is a 10-year-old male German Shepherd who was recently brought back to Valley Animal Centre after spending four years with his previous adopters. He was originally rescued from a local animal control agency and brought to VAC five years ago where he quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. His huge personality combined with his size and fluffy fur coat earned him the name Bear.

When Kate Davidson agreed to train and become her best friend’s doula, Kate thought that witnessing a twenty-one hour labor would be the most disturbing sight of the night. Instead, that honor goes to the vision of the aptly named Doctor Dick making out with a nurse in the hallway of A Better Birth Associates’ birthing center. Kate sees him all too soon in her own Serenity Yoga studio, where she learns that Doctor Richard Jones is the husband of one of her students.

Everyone has their own adoption stories, but today I want to tell you about his. In 2011, we were in the process of filling our new home with a dog. We knew a puppy was out of the question. We stopped by our local animal shelter a few times a week, checking out the dogs and getting to know them. There, in the third kennel on the right, I locked eyes with him. He was shy, scared; and silent; a dog who wouldn’t come anywhere near me. The kennel attendant took him out into the main yard so I could hang out with him. He followed the kennel attendant everywhere like a lost dog.

As the owner of Serenity Yoga, owner Kate Davidson is long overdue for a break. However, a ten-day working vacation on Orcas Island for a destination wedding is probably not the ideal holiday. This is the first trip with boyfriend Michael. Even before they arrive at Elysian Springs, Kate has a faceoff with Monica, a leopard print-wearing trophy wife whose off-leash Jack Russell terrier nearly incites Kate’s own beloved Bella into a frenzy.
