Composting has recently become one of the hottest topics in the world of recycling and conservation. For many years, only people who have large gardens with plenty of extra space have composted; but even if you only have a tiny garden or balcony, you too can compost!
Since I began writing this Going Green column a few months ago, I’ve focused on the need for recycling in our communities. This month I would like to take a different approach and present some ideas from a more ‘green’ perspective. Our Recycling Coordinators at Sunset Waste compiled a list of A to Z green tips which I am sharing with you.
Writing a monthly column has been a very exciting experience for me! I honestly don’t think there is a single person I’ve talked to in the past few months that I haven’t told about the online magazine and my articles. Visiting my sister, I had my laptop up and running with my most recent article open and ready for her to read.
Being somewhat new to the professional world of recycling, I have spent time learning as much as I could about our environment, the communities we serve and changes we can all make to promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
The original idea for a national Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1962. For several years, he had been troubled by the state of our environment and apparent lack of care for it. The senator spoke out … and, finally, the first National Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970!
