Cinderella

by Terrance McArthur

The Fairy Godmother waves her wand and Cinderella’s rags magically transform into a beautiful ball gown and glass slippers…that is so retro-Disney.
In Shine! Youth Theatre’s Cindy! A Cinderella Pop Musical, the Fairy Godmother wears glasses, the wand is a soap-bubble shooter, the glass slippers are classic-black-lace-up basketball sneakers, and the skirt of the ball-gown….well, that really is the stuff of fairy-tale magic.

I always enjoy it when a movie starts with a short. The pre-show before Cinderella was a Frozen short about Ana’s Birthday and how Elsa was trying to make her birthday special but she came down with the Frozen Fever where she sneezed mini snowmen. It was really a cute story worth seeing in itself.

At intermission, I tweeted, “Okay, this show is basically perfect.”
But let me qualify that. Growing up, this was one of my very, very favorite musicals. I rented the Leslie Ann Warren version from our grocery store more times than I could count. I know every single note, and I can’t ever remember not knowing them.

The musical version of Cinderella opened at the Enchanted Playhouse in Visalia on February the fourth and goes until the 19th. Director Don Williams stated that they decided to go with the musical version at the recommendation of founding director Susan Sluka-Kelly, who performed this version with her new company in Rancho Cucamonga a year and a half ago and it was well received.
