The Cat House on the Kings came in second place in the Spring Beta shelter challenge earning a $5,000 prize. We truly appreciate all the people who loyally voted for us. The next challenge, New Beginnings has already begun and runs through July 15.

The first order of business is the Valentine’s Day raffle. A generous donor has given The Cat House on the Kings a set of pink sapphire/diamond pierced earrings and a 7” matching tennis bracelet. This stunning jewelry set is valued at over $3,000!

This week we are interviewing Valley historian and author Stephen H. Provost. Last year he released his book Highway 99. The book is filled with historic photographs and forgotten tales. Highway 99 is a nostalgia-fueled road trip into California motoring culture. Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win a copy of Highway 99, and a link to purchase it from Amazon.

As the end of the year approaches, there is still time to make a tax-deductible donation to The Cat House on the Kings. This has been a crazy year (meaning expensive) for The Cat House. The storms, the floods, trees crashing down, and fences destroyed. We had numerous cats dumped on our doorstep, cats rescued from cars, kittens rescued from dumpsters, cats/kittens attacked by dogs, hit by cars, abandoned in alleys.

Whenever one plans an open air event, the biggest concern is always the weather. There was much concern and trepidation, as the weather people were forecasting rain for Saturday, November 4, and quite a bit of rain, too. There must have been a whole lot of praying and hoping going on because the weather was beyond perfect. No rain, not too hot and not too cold.

The Open House is next weekend and the excitement is building. We are, however, a bit short on volunteers for setting up, breaking down, and lots of stuff in between. Please consider donating the gift of time. There are two shifts available to choose from for the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event. We all know that many hands makes light work so please shoot Tammy Barker an email right now. In the subject line write “I Want to Volunteer.” Email: tammy@cathouseonthekings[dot]com

So, I have returned from my two month summer hiatus. I generally only take the one month, with Harvie graciously filling in for me. However, this year brought many circumstances that were unyielding and very demanding. Well, of course, the onslaught of kittens was non-stop. Then in mid-July, I blew out my knee while simultaneously pulling the hamstring in my other leg. I suffered a torn ACL, a torn meniscus, and a fractured knee cap. Understandably, I was in a lot of pain and not too mobile. Fortunately my daughter was able to step in and help out with the kittens.

We’ve been seeing green at The Cat House on the Kings this summer! Thanks to the extra rain that we received this winter and spring, we have more greenery than we’ve seen in quite a few years. But sometimes the greenery doesn’t stay where it belongs. Early one August morning, our staff came to work before dawn only to discover that the driveway to The Cat House was completely blocked by a huge fallen tree.

When my best friend Kayla and I hang out, it’s usually because one of us has texted the other saying, “Hey, want to go get breakfast?” For her, it’s usually pancakes with a side of eggs and sausage while for me it’s french toast or a waffle with bananas and peanut butter—don’t judge me okay! We both have to have coffee with lots of Splenda.

It’s been a challenging summer for the staff and volunteers of The Cat House on the Kings, but as always, they have risen to the occasion and accepted every challenge with enthusiasm and compassion. Here are just a few of the recent developments…

The Cat House on the Kings will be holding an online fundraiser from June 26 through July 8 because the unbelievable onslaught of kittens is quickly draining the coffers. Every year you think it will get better because The Cat House has fixed so many cats. But in fact, 2017 has been one of the worst years on record. An astounding number of kittens have come through the door, and people call every single day with kitten problems.

The Open House is next weekend, so I hope you are all set to be there. The staff is working furiously to ready the grounds. Next week the volunteers will begin arriving, and the pace gets frantic as the big day approaches. Don’t forget to buy raffle tickets for the spectacular quilt. We are also raffling off a gorgeous donated ring appraised at $1.300! The 18k white gold ring (size 7) is a large oval citrine surrounded by 40 round amethysts.

The Open House is fast approaching and will be here before you know it. Please, please, please think of something you could donate to our silent auction. The auction is the big money maker for The Cat House and we really need your donations. With the number of abandoned, rescued, and injured animals coming in, we need your help more than ever. I challenge everyone to find something they can donate to our auction.
