I have good news for you, and I have bad news for you.
Let me tell you the bad news first. In a few days, summer vacation will be over for all the students in the Central Valley. That's the bad news for children who are really enjoying their summer vacations, extra swims, trips to camp, and sleeping late in the morning.
A clean-cut guy holding a metal detection wand stood beside me in the Mineshaft Saloon and Dance Hall lobby. The dude looked to be my age, twenty-nine. Like me, he wore a tomato-red golf shirt over black jeans.
Six hundred plus backpacks were handed out to Sanger Unified School District (SUSD) students at the third annual Sanger Back to School Pool Party and more than 700 people attended the event. The theme for this year's party was "We Got Your Back 2013."
With the start of school just around the corner, the television has been filled with ads about back-to-school supplies: backpacks, pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, etc. from Target and Staples, haircuts from Super Cuts, school shoes from Famous Footwear, and clothes from Old Navy and JCP, and the list goes on and on. Anyway, it made me think about getting ready for my own schooldays way back in the 1950s.
According to Pastor William D. Sanchez of the Faith Family Worship Center Apostolic Church (FFWCAC) in Sanger, more than 650 people were served a free meal, were registered and given free school supplies, and had their name put in a prize drawing for free bicycles, during their second annual Back to School Community Outreach event.
