KRL readers might perhaps know me as the editor of a recent series of “inspired by” anthologies: The Beat of Black Wings: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Songs of Joni Mitchell (Untreed Reads, 2020), Only the Good Die Young: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Songs of Billy Joel (Untreed Reads, 2021), and The Great Filling Station Holdup: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Songs of Jimmy Buffett (Down and Out Books, 2021).

In my debut thriller, Dark Things I Adore, an eclectic group of young artists forge deep and impactful connections with each other during the summer of 1988 at the Lupine Valley Arts Collective, a cloistered and prestigious arts camp in King City, a remote (and fictitious) town in Maine. Coral, Moss, Juniper, Mantis, and Zephyr (who all go by their camp nicknames), spend a dream-like summer together before one of them suffers an unspeakable cruelty at the hands of another in the group that transforms their collective dream into a nightmare.

Weekend getaways are the quickest way to give yourself a breather, as not all vacations need to be lengthy in duration. A 48-hour getaway is highly underrated- not only does it allow you to destress during a busy work month but it is also budget-friendly.

One of the wonderful things that the San Joaquin Valley has to offer is fresh fruit and vegetables–the City of Reedley is actually known as The World’s Fruit Basket. One way to obtain some of that delicious produce is from fruit stands in the area. Recently, we chatted with Reedley farmer and the operator of one of these stands, Liset Garcia, from Sweet Girl Farms. Sweet Girl Farms is a family business.

This week we chatted with Sheryl Wall, one of the owners of Natisa’s Boarding House, a local dog boarding house in Reedley, CA. Sheryl and Brian Wall own and run the business together.

As theatre gradually returns to local stages it is taking on many forms, including staged readings. We recently chatted with Christine Myers, a member of UR Here Theater, to learn about the staged readings they are doing at 2nd Space Theatre in Fresno. Christine is a board member of UR Here Theater and the director of the readings.

It’s been a scorching, waterless, and fiery summer here on the West Coast. The rest of the country is dealing with heat, floods, hurricanes, and tornados. Covid is making a deadly comeback. This is when a good book is necessary for sanity. Stay well and hydrated!

We have interviewed many local artists over the past 11 years here in KRL, and this week we are interviewing one of our own, Sanger artist Terrance Mc Arthur. Terrance is an artist, a storyteller, writer (for KRL and of short stories), a local actor, and former librarian. And so much more!
