Marilyn

by Marilyn Meredith

When I read the book I had no idea it was categorized as a YA. I loved it from beginning to end. I supposed I should have realized it was a YA because of the lack of bad language and explicit sex scenes. What it did have was a unique and believable plot that gripped me from the very beginning.

Set in 1896, in the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest, China Bohannon longs to move up from office girl, dogsbody and book keeper to be an investigator in her uncle’s detective agency. She also has crush on her uncle’s partner, Grafton Doyle.

Victoria Winters comes to Collinwood, an isolated mansion in coastal Maine, to work as a governess, but soon finds herself drawn into a strange, Gothic world of vampires, ghosts and a family curse that dates back centuries. This is the official beginning to the immensely popular black and white soap opera soap opera. It opened in June of 1966, no doubt part of the reason so many kids got hooked on the story.

Porterville has none of the big name chain restaurants, but it does have a few gems of small owner-operated eateries. One of these—and my favorite—is the Thai Kitchen, a little hole in the wall place at 951 W. Henderson, on the north end of town right off the 65 freeway.
