Summer Games Fest is over and, therefore, the end of constant video game trailers and release dates. But, that doesn’t mean the fun is over yet.
Stray, an adorable post-apocalyptic game where you play as a cat, was released on July 19th for PC, PS4, and PS5. I have been anticipating this game since it was announced years ago. I played it the second it was released and spent the whole day playing until I beat it. The game’s run time is about five to six hours for the main story and about eleven hours if you are a completionist and want to do every side quest and mess around a bit as a cat. The game developers studied cat behavior to make sure that when playing as a cat, you really felt like you were a cat, down to the little noise cats make when they land after jumping. Not only is the cat stuff adorable, but the world and story pull you in instantly. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where all of humanity is gone, you move through a world filled with AI and robots, and cats, of course. If you love cats, I highly recommend playing this game.
As Dusk Falls, a uniquely drawn choice-based story-driven game, was released on July 19th on Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The game is drawn in a painting style and features movement almost like flipping through book pages. You play as different characters who all come together during a stressful, traumatic event. While I was not a fan of the art style and direction of the gameplay, the game has received rave reviews from critics and gamers across the board.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the next game in the Xeno series, releases on Nintendo Switch on July 29. The game is an open-world JRPG, just like the series predecessors. Both the story of Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 come into play in this third installment. The improved graphics, animation, and gameplay promise an amazing journey for fans of the Xeno series.
Santa Monica Studio, the developers of the God of War games, finally announced a release date for God of War Ragnarok. The game is set to release on November 9, 2022.
Unfortunately, in not such exciting game release news, the popular game publisher Square Enix just announced their new NFT project. An NFT is a digital asset that represents a real-world object that is usually bought or sold online with cryptocurrency. NFTs are controversial as they use a large abundance of energy to create them, therefore damaging the environment. Square Enix announced a Cloud Strife figure (the protagonist of FFVII) that will double as an NFT.
This month has featured some fun games, a much-anticipated release date, and some highly controversial news. I can’t wait to see what else this summer holds in the world of gaming.
