Brewed Awakening: A Coffee House Mystery by Cleo Coyle

I am a huge fan of Cleo Coyle’s Coffeehouse Mystery series so I was very excited to read the new one, Brewed Awakening. Every time I read one of these books, I feel like I’m visiting my favorite coffee shop, and spending time with friends. I can almost smell the coffee!
Brewed Awakening is quite different from the previous books in the series because it finds the main character Clare Cosi waking up on a park bench not knowing how she got there and not remembering the past 15 years! Clare had been missing for several days so her friends and family, and especially her fiancé Detective Mike Quinn, are overjoyed she is back, however that joy is tempered when she doesn’t remember most of them. Her missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed and if she can’t remember what happened, evidence begins to mount that makes the police suspect she was actually in on it. 
At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the memory loss, but it ended providing the chance to learn more about Clare’s past, and seeing who she was 15 years ago before she became owner of the Village Blend. It was very interesting to see how she had changed, and to see that deep down inside she was still the same old Clare where it counted. She is put into the care of a very questionable doctor who wants to lock her away from her family and friends so she can “get better,” but it becomes clear that he may not actually have her best interests at heart. Thankfully, even without her memories. Clare still remembers how to solve a crime, and she has the usual crew at her side to help.
It was fascinating to see not only more about Clare’s past, but to see how those around her reacted to her condition, especially her ex-husband Matt Allegro. Mike was still the sweet and reliable man who would do anything to save her, whether she ever remembered him or not. One of my favorite parts in the whole book was when Madame masterminds the perfect caper to rescue Clare.
While I missed not spending as much time in the Village Blend, every thing I love about this series was still there—the insider coffee tips, the wonderful characters, and a mystery filled with plot twists that kept me guessing all the way to the end! And in the back are wonderful recipes! What more could you ask for?

Cleo Coyle Discusses Brewed Awakening + Recipe and Giveaway
My husband and I have had plenty of ups and down, and we always try to put the pain, joy, and absurd humor of our daily lives into our novels. It’s one of the reasons readers tell us they’ve formed deep connections with our characters, especially our amateur sleuth, forty-something single mom and coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi.
For Clare’s latest case, Marc and I began our story development with a conversation over (no surprise) coffee. After everything we’ve gone through as a couple, we wondered: What if our years together were suddenly wiped from our memories? Would we be drawn to each other again? If so, how exactly does “like” deepen into something more? When does love happen?

With Clare on a path to be married to her longtime boyfriend, NYPD Detective Mike Quinn, we decided to explore those questions in Brewed Awakening, and we agreed that Clare would suffer from a traumatic memory loss. Her damaged memory wipes away years of experiences, including every single memory of the man she loves. The block is tied to a crime she witnessed, and she must find a way to recover clues to solving that crime, buried somewhere in her brain.
But what Clare loses is much more than clues to a crime. It’s the most precious treasure there is. Though we often take our memories for granted, they may be the most valuable thing we possess. Memories are what keep our loved ones dear to us now—and those we’ve lost alive in our hearts.

Cleo Coyle’s Candy Cane Frosting
Candy Cane Frosting by Cleo Coyle
This jolly frosting is easy to make and impressive to serve with its pretty pink color and festive flecks of crushed candy canes. Best of all, when you spread it on a plain old sheet cake, cupcakes, sugar cookies, or pan of brownies, you’ll instantly transform them into holiday treats that will cheer up any party tray.

Makes 1¾ cups frosting—enough for a thin frosting on a 9×13-inch pan of brownies or sheet cake. For a thicker frosting, simply double the recipe.
Ingredients:
4 T. unsalted butter, softened
1–2 T. whole milk
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract or 1 T. peppermint schnapps
1/4 cup finely crushed candy canes*
Directions: Beat butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add milk, sugar, and peppermint extract. Blend until sugar is fully dissolved. Add crushed candy canes and beat until the frosting is light, fluffy, and pink. If frosting is too stiff, add a bit more milk. Frost your cake, cupcakes, brownies, or cookies. For a pretty finish, rough chop a few more candy canes and sprinkle on top.
*Note: For 1/4 cup of finely crushed candy canes, use 10 small or 3 large candy canes. Seal in a plastic bag and bang away with a rolling pin (a sweet treat and a holiday stress reliever)!

Hello! I also love this series!! It was a bit disconcerting in the beginning when Claire wakes up on the bench, but I really think that added to the story because I felt as thrown off by events as she was, which made me think even more about her situation and how that would feel.
I have to say that I agree completely with this review. This has been and continues to be one of my all-time favorite series.

This latest book sounds so interesting. Usually I get sucked in right at the beginning of the books. I don’t think I’ve had to start one of these books twice! Clare usually is in the coffee shop and witnesses something so this one starts with her completely somewhere else which makes it more intriguing. Usually Clare remembers everything so this book seems to be so opposite.
I see again that she is saved by those who love her and care about her. She and Matt have quite an interesting relationship and has a love for her even though he’s into other women. Matt is at her side when there’s actual or potential danger, he’s partially probably due to his adventurous side as well as having a love for her. Madame seems to be super cool, even in this book even though she’s the ex mother in law. I’m so looking forward to getting into this book.

I love, love, love this series. I’ve read every book and right now I’m listening to them all on audio format. The coffee descriptions make you want to go to your local coffee shop and try one and the recipes sound so delicious, you can almost taste them as you read. Keep the series coming, I need to read about Claire and Mike’s wedding!

Amnesia and memory loss are intriguing unless they happen to you. Going through the senses may reawaken parts of your brain with the help of being around animals, music and singing, tasting family tradition foods, smelling scents like roses which remind me of Granny, and seeing photographs and home movies. Clare, the sleuth, isn’t just forgetful and bumbling, she finds new ways to discover clues and solve the mystery. Plus there are always mouth watering recipes in each book, which make me hungry just reading them.

I discovered the Coffeehouse Mysteries after about six of them had been published. I quickly “devoured” the entire series that had been written to that date and eagerly await each new book. I recently read Brewed Awakening and found it just as captivating as the rest. Since I’ve never been to NYC, I enjoy opening my maps app and following Clare around the city. Hopefully this series will go on for a long time!

Marc and Alice transport me to New York with each of these books. I make a great cup of coffee and her recipes pair nicely with it! It makes for a gull sensory experience. If you never read this series, start at the beginning. The characters develop with time and their relationships change greatly. In this newest book they got quite clever. We get to see Cleo from a new perspective which is quite interesting. New information is also revealed about her relationship with her ex.
This book will entertain you and take you on a little trip to the Hamptons as well. Enjoy!

My husband and I eagerly await the next installment of Claire Cosi’s exploits. So that we can enjoy the stories together, we always listen to them on audible. The biggest drawback to listening to the books is no recipes. To try out the recipes, I have to check out the book from the library. The results are usually worth the effort. I recently made Matt’s Pernil and it was the best pork shoulder I have ever eaten.
I haven’t read this series and now am so stoked to read Brewed Awakenings.

I love this series probably because of how much I love coffee. But I came into coffee late, I used to not like it so much. Then I stopped drinking caffeine of any kind (soda,tea stuff like that) then came migraines. And my doctor told me to take my medication with coffee. Suddenly coffee became my best friend.

I purchased my first Coffee House Mystery at a used bookstore and I was hooked. I have read all the Haunted Bookstore series currently in print and received the remaining Coffee House Mystery’s for Christmas … except Brewed Awakening. The writing is fresh and realistic. I am looking forward to reading the remaining Coffee House Mystery’s.

I was not sure if I was to comment on the review, the book, or the section about Marc and Alice writing together. I recently discovered “Cleo Coyle” and the Coffeeshop Mystery series and have read them all. This book is a wonderful addition to it. It’s a slightly different style because the other books in the series are mostly told from Clare’s perspective (ie first person) but since she has memory loss, the other characters share their point of view. It is neat to hear how a author team works well together to create something that provides enjoyment for many.

I have loved following Claire’s life from not liking Mike to loving him. I still use recipes I copied from earlier books.
This is one of my favorite series and is my go-to cozy audiobook series for long work drives. Thank you for the lightheartedness, romance, and suspense over the years!
I love this series. I am reading Brewed Awakening now. I had global transient amnesia a couple of years ago so I couldn’t wait to read this book. I would love to win. And I can’t wait to finish this book to see how Claire recovers. I don’t remember anything that happened during my amnesia. Luckily it only lasted 24 hours. I was lucky.

Reading mystery books that incorporate recipes are a guilty pleasure of mine. After teaching young minds all day and then doing the wife, mother, chief cook and bottle washer job, I long for a relaxing getaway. Just finished Brewed Awakening. Loved seeing the depths of relationships through what is a dark time.
I usually listen to audiobooks during my commute, but when I discovered the audiobook for Brewed Awakening was not yet available, I couldn’t wait and went “old school. ” (well not really…I bought the kindle version)
Totally in love with the book so far and it really does bring up some interesting questions about life and love!

I have read all of the coffeehouse books to date and love them. I always eagerly await the next offering. I have made a number of the recipes and love that part of this series too. It’s hard to pick a favorite character. Wish I could win the contest, but I’ll be happy enough just having the next book in the series to read.
