Details at the end of this post on how to win a copy of Murder Most Howl, and a link to purchase it.
Now that Holly Miller’s grandmother is taking a much-needed cruise to Hong Kong, Holly is excited and anxious to be left in charge of their Sugar Maple Inn. It may be the slowest time of the year for tourists, but Wagtail, Virginia, is hosting its first Murder Most Howl, a combination murder-mystery weekend and scavenger hunt. In this pet-friendly and animal-themed town, local businesses will be housing guests and assisting in hiding clues that lead towards the game’s final solution.
Although the script of the mystery game incorporates made-up pasts for their real characters, someone seems intent on leaving red envelopes that threaten to reveal very real secrets. When a blizzard takes down the power in half of the town, the influx of a mystery bookclub, former supermodel, and infuriated locals combine into a simmering pot full of motives, all being housed within Holly’s pet-welcoming Inn. As the merchants continue to play their roles while hiding rhyme-linked fake weapons, Holly begins her own investigation with the aid of her new shady handyman Shadow, friendly Officer Dave, Hair of the Dog bar owner Val Kowalchuk, and of course Holly’s adorable companions Trixie and Twinkletoes.
The author of the Domestic Diva Mystery books succeeds in once again crafting a series that proves to be irresistible to all cozy mystery novel readers. Who couldn’t love a novel that features cherished pets, eccentric characters, and delectable human and pet-friendly recipes? Considering that even Walmart now stocks organic pet food and drugstores provide Halloween costumes for dogs, an entire town dedicated to pets and their owners is both plausible and desirable. The appreciation of all things pets never comes at the expense of good writing and a compelling plot though, and the author similarly succeeds in veering away from cloyingly cute territory. A hint of romance continues to spark throughout the novel, but it is truly the love of our furry companions that make this always-funny mystery such a delight.
