Road Trip With A Vampire is book 3 in Jenna Levine’s My Vampires series, which is apparently also the last book. The first two books were called My Roommate Is A Vampire, and My Vampire Plus-One. This is a delightful vampire rom-com series that I highly recommend and am sad to see be over. While each book has it’s own plot, there are crossovers from some of the characters from the other books in book 1 and 2, so I highly recommend reading these in order.
Zelda Watson is a yoga instructor and owner of a yoga studio in a small California town. Her life is pretty ordinary, at least on the surface. She has a small apartment above the studio and is happy with the life she has created there. But she has a problem, before she became Zelda, she had been known as Grizelda The Terrible—a very bad witch who caused a lot of trouble and destruction, until something happened that pushed her to fake her death and leave that life and her magic completely behind. She is starting to have a bit of trouble controlling her magic, which she only uses a tiny bit each night to keep it under control, but it doesn’t seem to be working any more. One night, a vampire with amnesia shows up at her studio with a letter from an old friend named Reggie, who is also a vampire, asking her if she can help him. With the exception of Reggie, she has a bad history with vampires and is hesitant, but she ends up saying yes. It doesn’t help that the vampire, Peter, is gorgeous. Despite his fangs, he seems harmless enough and she hopes that she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, before sending him on his way. However, a threatening message from Peter’s past, and Zelda’s need to find a better way to control her magic, sends them on a cross-country road trip for answers. But they may find much more than they bargained for.
As I said, I love this entire series! These books have such a fun new twist on vampire stories and I love the romance in each one. It definitely is a cozy vampire rom-com series. Road Trip With A Vampire was a bit different from the first two because the female protagonist wasn’t a “normal” human since she was a witch, but still you had the “human falling in love with a vampire” dynamic and complications that it can bring.
This series has a much more adult, and honestly more realistic, feel to it than the YA vampire love stories, and I love that. The dialogue is witty and fun. Zelda and Peter’s chemistry is perfect, and the twist at the end of this one I never saw coming! While not technically a mystery, finding out who Peter is/was definitely brings a mystery element to the story. There’s a bit of strong language and spice, so not quite like a “cozy” mystery, but I’m finding this very typical of a cozy fantasy.
If you like vampire stories like I do, you have to check this series out! Especially if you are looking for something less dark that will make you laugh! Can’t wait to read more from Jenna Levine.
