A Christmas Eve wedding sounds so romantic, but when the groom backs out less than two weeks before the big day, it’s heart-wrenching. It would be one thing if he just had cold feet. It’s a whole other kind of hurt when he says he met someone more “Zen.”
Holly White returns home to the Christmas tree farm her parents own. Tourist season is sure to take her mind off the breakup—eventually. The Twelve Days of Reindeer Games will provide enough distraction. Margaret Fenwick provides even more. She’s in charge of the Historical Society and determined to make the town accurate, down to the paint colors. Since she orders people to comply instead of working with them, her fans are far and few between.
It’s not a total surprise when she’s found dead. Since one of the people she argued with was Holly’s father and her body was found on their farm, every one of the farm employees and family are suspects, plus the other townspeople.
Holly attempts to divert the Sheriff’s attention away from the farm and that means she has to ask questions. She’s not as subtle as she thinks, and it soon leads to threats if she refuses to stop. The Sheriff finally realizes she’s better off as an unofficial partner than on her own. At least she’s not thinking about the cancelled wedding anymore!
This is the first in the series. The characters are delightful, the town warm and friendly, perfect for a day trip, a weekend or the whole Twelve Days. There’s a potential romance brewing, Christmas traditions like hiding pickles in the trees, a tree decorating contest, and a snowball race. If this doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit, ready for hot chocolate and snickerdoodles, nothing will. A couple of cats add to the story. Grab a plate of cookies, a hot drink, and a cat to settle in for a satisfying mystery.
